The Dino-Riders
Hey, guys! Do you still remember Dino Riders? If you do, then I will share my story with you.
Collecting toys is really fun. Back in 1989, when I was in my elementary days, I love spending all my “money in school" just to buy (not that expensive) toys. I bought robots, rubberized Mario Bros., Ghostbusters-Slymer, and of course, the Dragon Ball Z. I don’t usually complete all the characters of a certain cartoon series or movie. I just collect a few of them or the main characters only. Once I have money, it’s either I spend half or all of it for the toys alone. It's about buying toys versus having empty stomach. My perspective is that I can just go home for lunch on a 10-minute walk after school, so spending all the money in my pocket is no big deal at all. Then I got my first collection - The Dino Riders. The series focuses on a battle between the great Valorians and the evil Rulons in the prehistoric Earth. The Valorians is a race of superhuman, while the Rulons is a mixture of creature and human beings (usually reptile-headed). Both races came from the future but were transported back in time to the age of the dinosaurs. Once on Earth, the Valorians befriended the dinosaurs, but the Rulons brainwashed them.

Dino Riders is a cartoon television series that first aired in 1988. Dino-Riders was primarily a promotional show to launch a new Tyco toy line. Only fourteen episodes of it were produced, three of which were produced on VHS for the United States. The show aired in the U.S. as part of the Marvel Action Universe.
I often watch the series on a local channel (RPN 9) during lunchtime, which I remember every Saturday. When my classes were over, my running point was to my favorite toy stall in front of our school. There were various toys everywhere that I couldn't resist to buy at least one toy at a time. But for as long as I had enough money, then I would buy two or more toys. Then, I saw the cartoon series that I had been watching printed on a beige small plastic bag. I felt so happy but I was not really sure what was inside. Is it a typical little rubberized Dino Rider character or just a junk food with a free Dino-rider sticker? I had no idea and got curious, so I bought one to find out. I was delighted to get my first ever “Yungstar” Dino-rider that was about 3 inches tall with removable parts (7 detachable parts-two arms, two legs, front and back, and the head) which only cost me 1 peso and 50 centavos! I was really happy that moment. The most exciting and most challenging part of it was to guess which character I would get by merely touching the plastic bag since I wasn't able to see what was inside. I had to do it carefully or I would end up collecting the same character.
Dino Riders are consisted of 5 groups such as:
Valorians
Commandos (special forces military unit within the Dino-Riders)
Cro-Magnons ( prehistoric tribe, Valorians’ ally)
Rulons (race of aliens that are the enemies of the Valorians)
Neanderthals ( Cro-magnons’ Rival, Rulons’ ally)

My collections started to multiply. I had Questar, Serena, Turret, Gunnur and more. It was really fun to find the right collection for you. It was like an achievement to me. I never mind spending my savings just to buy and collect toys. But one day, I decided to share them with my classmates and friends so I sold some of my Dino Rider collections, especially those duplicated characters I bought. My classmates liked them so much as if they were like a school of piranhas indulging on their feeding frenzy (which happened to be me) every time I show them my collections during recess. I got overwhelmed that I sold 11 pieces on the first day, and felt happy when I found out that 4 of my classmates started to collect them too, as soon as they had their money.
As early as 8 years old, I learned and felt the urge to collect and trade toys. For me, it is not just about keeping them for yourself nor benefitting out of it in terms of monetary. It’s not just about how pricey your collections are nor how much you invested to acquire them. I realized that it is about how you value your passion, and how you share the feelings and moments with your colleagues and friends. Most importantly, it is all about how you enjoy every moment staring, stroking and holding them, cleaning them out, caressing them, and playing them as if you are the director and they’re your movie stars ( I mean the toys, not my friends). Though, I know a lot of toy collectors who really invest on expensive items and high valued ones, considering the makers and the qualities like MIB’s and so on. Well, I have nothing against that. In fact, I have always dreamt of having those expensive action figures. However, for me, the true meaning of collecting is creating beautiful stories and memories out of it. Did it frustrate you or put a smile on your face? Would you mind buying Knock-off toys?. As old as 28 years of age classic toys, I definitely would! It really doesn’t matter to me whether the maker is Bandai, Husbro, Figuarts, or Playarts. Regardless if the toys are made from bamboo or wood, for as long as sharing them would create happy moments, that’s what matters most. I have no regrets losing all of my Dino Rider collections because I made beautiful memories out of them (partly saddened me that I was not able to keep them tho). It was really fun indeed!
